Welcome to Deena's Friends for a Cure! My name is Deena Alansky, and I have been a volunteer for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) since 2003. On Feb. 18, 2004 I lost my brother to leukemia. To honor his memory, I have made it my mission to educate my family and friends about the National Bone Marrow Registry and to fundraise in the fight against blood cancer by raising money for Delete Blood Cancer DKMS, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Amy's Army. I do these things in loving memory of my brother, Rand E. Alansky, who will live on forever in my heart.

DELETE BLOOD CANCER DKMS: Delete Blood Cancer DKMS is a nonprofit organization that leads the fight to delete blood cancer by empowering people to take action, give bone marrow (or blood stem cells) and save lives. They also sponsor and assist individuals like ME to organize my own bone marrow drive.
HISTORY OF DEENA'S FRIENDS FOR A CURE:
In Spring of 2004, my good friend, Don Splitstone, asked me to create a website for the first annual "Fill the Mug" Charity Bar Crawl to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This event is organized by Don Splitstone and Matt Graver, and I provide annual updates and help with publicity. The Charity Bar Crawl takes place every spring on Pittsburgh's South Side. More information is available at: www.charitybarcrawl.com, and please "LIKE" us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/charitybarcrawl.
Don Splitstone's mother is a leukemia survivor who received a successful bone marrow transplant 13 years ago! She is alive and well today because a total stranger gave her the GIFT OF LIFE! You can be a REAL LIFE SUPERHERO! Join the marrow registry for free Online at: www.deletebloodcancer.org. The test to join is just a cheek swab. Register Online, and receive the cheek swab testing kit in the mail. It's never been EASIER to join. If you're ever found to be a matching donor, you might truly help save a life. Learn more at: www.marrowdonation.org.
In 2010, I was a candidate in the Man & Woman of the Year Campaign, a friendly competition to see which man and woman could raise the most funds for the LLS in a 10-week time frame. I organized NINE FUNDRAISING EVENTS, and decided to create the Deena's Friends for a Cure website to promote my events, tell my story, and raise awareness for the bone marrow registry. I am proud to have raised $8,476.51, winning second place in the contest.
In Spring of 2012, I organized a series of FIVE FUNDRAISING EVENTS to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society via Team in Training. I was inspired by two friends, Doug Belkofer and Don Splitstone, who were both participating in Team in Training that year. Don has been an active participant for over a decade, but Doug was brand new to Team and Training, and completed his first triathlon. I raised approximately $5,000 and split the funds 50/50 between my two friends' TNT campaign pages to help them reach their personal fundraising goals.
In 2014, I am organizing a Marrow Registration Drive and Fundraising Event, both to be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 to honor the 10th anniversary of my brother's death. I am also hosting a Marrow Education Session the week before the drive on Wed., Feb. 12, 2014 for anyone interested in volunteering at the drive or wanting to learn more. In addition, I am helping to promote a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society fundraiser being organized by the PITTSBURGH BELLAS, a mountain bike team participating in the LLS fundraising event, the Race to Anyplace. Please visit the EVENTS PAGE for details. As always, thank you for your continued support of the National Bone Marrow Registry, Delete Blood Cancer DKMS and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
